Dell G5 15: The ultimate laptop for gamers

The newest laptop from Dell is the G5 15. It is a powerful computer with exciting technology and it costs less than other computers.

In other words, this laptop is an option for people who can’t afford one of Dell’s laptops.

Dell G5 15 Design & Build

The Dell G5 computer has shiny black paint, which is different from other computers. From some angles, it can look like the lid was sand-blasted. There are many vents on the back and lights that change colors at the bottom.

This laptop is really good because it has a shiny lid and lots of lights. It might not be for everyone because the lid will make some people mad and there are big air vents.

The Dell G5 15 is thick and heavy. It weighs 2.34kg and is 25mm wide. The MSI GS66 Stealth and Acer Predator Helios 300 are also 15.6-inch machines, but they are thinner and lighter than the Dell G5 15 machine.

If you want to lose weight, this laptop is 1.6kg and 18mm. It is one of the lightest 14-inch laptops available today.

The performance of the Dell G5 15 Gaming is not very good in other areas. It’s not very stable and the cover that opens with one hinge is loose.

It has a USB 3.2 Gen 1 and a Type-C connection that supports DisplayPort, but it does not have USB 3.2 Gen 2 support and only two ports can connect to devices with USB 2.0 ports.

The power button of the Dell is also a fingerprint reader, but it’s too sensitive. There’s a middling resolution webcam with no Windows Hello support.

Screen & Speakers

This laptop does not sync with a Full HD VA display. This means it will be good for single-player games and eSport matches, but not much else.

The overall score of 75 is good enough for most indoor settings, and the screen’s brightness level of 325 nits is sufficient. The contrast ratio of 1,204:1 is also appropriate, with a lot of punch and depth to it.

The colors of this screen are not good. There is not enough red and green, and the temperature is too cold.

The delta E is 2.63 which is on average, but the color temperature and gamut ratings show that this screen does not show all of the colors well and it struggles to tell similar tones apart.

The Helios 300 has an excellent screen for gaming. This is because it has contrast and brightness levels that are good. The Acer Helios 300 is better than the Dell here.

But the MSI is even better with a higher refresh rate of 240Hz and better benchmarks.

The speakers are good and they have a good sound. But the bass is not as good as it could be and they go too high so it makes them sound bad. For playing games, this is not the best equipment because there are better speakers.

Keyboard & Trackpad

The keyboard layout is very good. It has a number pad, double-height Return key, and separate cursor buttons. The LEDs may be changed with patterns and colors in four zones.

This is good news. But the keyboard performance is bad. There are too many buttons and they are far apart. The keys feel like they’re not there when you push them, so the keyboard feels bad in your hands.

The trackpad isn’t good. The corners are hard to click, and the pad is on the left side of the machine. This blocks your ability to use WASD keys when applicable.

The Dell G5 15 Gaming typing and pointing gear are not good enough for serious gamers. The keyboard’s competitors have more to offer in this area. If you connect a gaming mouse, you will have better control while playing games.

Dell G5 15 ports

This computer has a power jack, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI 2.0 port, one USB 3.1 connector, a dropped jaw RJ45 Ethernet connection, and a USB Type-C connector on the left side.

The right side has a wedge lock slot and two USB 2.0 ports as well as an SD card slot and headphone jack.

Specs & Performance

The Dell G5 15 Gaming we looked at is equipped with some of the most popular gaming laptop components right now, including an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card and an Intel Core i7-10750H CPU.

https://www.techadvisor.com/cmsdata/reviews/3795027/dell_g5_15_review_design_thumb.jpg

This computer has the same processor as the Core i5-7600K, but it has more cache. It starts at 2GHz and has 4 cores.

There is 8GB of RAM on board, Wi-Fi 6, and Gigabit Ethernet. There is no second hard disk so you will need to use a USB memory stick or external hard disk.

The RTX 2060 is a good graphics card. It can play games with Ultra settings at 79fps and 98fps in Far Cry New Dawn and Wolfenstein. It beats competitors MSI and Acer, which both only scored 36,071 in Sky Diver.

There’s plenty of speed for single-player games at high settings, and eSports titles will easily fly at the necessary 144Hz screen rate.

The Intel CPU is very good at performing tests. It is quicker than the Acer and MSI machines. You can use a Dell to do regular computing, lots of browser tabs, Office programs, and basic photo-editing with no problems.

You can work on an AMD chip, but it is better to work on a Ryzen 7 4800H. It does better in Geekbench and PC Mark tests and is more suitable for video editing, multi-threaded tasks, and multitasking. Even the cheaper version of the Dell G5 15 that has an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H outperforms the Intel chip.

Dell’s thermal performance is average. When you are playing games, the noise is not too loud and it will be easy to put on a headset to cover up any noise. The top of the keyboard (and bottom) gets hot when doing things like watching YouTube or playing games.

If you use this laptop on your lap, it will feel bad. When running business equipment, it is a little noisier and hotter. This laptop is better for games than work – and it is at its best when used sitting down at a desk.

Dell’s battery lasts a long time. It lasted for eight hours and forty-three minutes in our test. But you need to be careful because if you use too much energy, it will not last as long. Dell’s battery is the same as MSI’s and Asus’. But it is better than Acer’s battery.

Battery life

The battery life of the Gaming Dell G5 15 is also something you should know. It could play a movie for nearly ten hours. That means that it can be used for different things than just playing games because it can last so long.

However, it’s worth noting that in more intensive Home 8 battery tests, which replicate typical usage conditions such as document production and video chatting, the battery died significantly sooner at 4 hours 39 minutes.

Even though these are great results for a laptop, they are particularly good for one that is as inexpensive as the Dell G5 15 5590.

Price

In the UK and the US, Dell offers five versions of this computer. Four of them have a 144Hz display and a Core i7-10750H CPU. This one does too.

The Dell G5 15 is a budget-friendly computer in America. The base model costs $839 and includes a Core i5-10300H CPU, low GTX 1650 Ti graphics, and a 60Hz display. In the United States, the line follows suit with the UK’s — you can buy CPUs from Core i7 as well as 144Hz displays and higher GPU capacity.

Some laptops come with different storage options. More expensive models can have 240 Hz displays. But in America, there is one laptop that costs $879 and has AMD-based graphics, which is not as good as Dell’s graphics.

Their prices range between $1500 and $1750. You can find different models with differences in key areas. More affordable models include the GTX 1660 Ti, which is an esports-capable GPU that leaves out Ray-Tracing (for now).

The more expensive versions of the machine also include 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. Dell makes a computer that is based on AMD.

It costs £949 or £899. This computer has an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor that is better than Intel’s Core i7-10750H in most productivity tasks. However, this computer also has AMD Radeon RX 5600M graphics which are slower than the GTX 1660 Ti and RTX 2060.

It’s also available on Amazon and Curry’s PC World.

Conclusion

The Dell G5 15 Gaming laptop is a fantastic gaming machine with excellent battery life. It does not have the best keyboard or trackpad, though. It’s also thicker and heavier than its competitors and has a worse screen.

In this light, the £1,349/$1,347 model we’ve looked at is worse than machines with comparable speed and a smaller and more stylish enclosure. The display is also better and the keyboard is quicker.

I do not recommend the Dell G5 15 RTX 2060 laptop. You should not buy it if you are looking for something good. It is only good if you are looking for something worse.

If you are looking for a laptop that is good for esports or mainstream games, a GTX 1650 Ti or GTX 1660 Ti-based laptop is a decent choice. It is not as good as others, but it is cheaper.

Dell G5 15 review: Observations

The speakers are good, but they don’t have bass. But the webcam is clear and it’s 720p HD. There’s also a fingerprint scanner on the power button which may be used to log in to Windows Hello.

Is it a good idea to buy a laptop from Dell?

Yes. The Dell G5 15 is in the perfect location between pricing and performance, coming in at $839. You get what you paid for with the Dell G5 15 gaming laptop.
